Background
Ernest Shaffer is a DevOps Engineer and Systems Administrator with over 20 years of experience. He has a passion for Linux and Open-Source projects, contributing to initiatives such as Racktables among others. At BrightApps his work includes managing AWS infrastructure using tools like Terraform, CDK, Ansible, CodeBuild, Packer, ECS, and CloudWatch. He oversees four ELK stacks for system and application logs and metrics, and performs monthly security reviews and patching to maintain security posture.
Ernest is proficient in Docker, CloudFormation, Jenkins, Unix Shell scripting, and various Linux distributions. He has significantly contributed to enhancing the security posture of his projects, improving AMI build automation, and rebuilding the production ELK stack to align with the non-production stack. He has also developed several Python scripts for rapid reporting on EC2 instances and AMIs, and recently started migrating a sandbox deployment from Terraform to AWS CDK using Python.
His passion for automation and repeatability, coupled with his extensive experience across multiple industries, brings skill, flexibility, and a high level of agility to the team. Outside of work, Ernest enjoys discussing Linux, scripting and automation, and developments related to SpaceX and Starship.
